ISMETT is the
only hospital in Southern Italy authorized to perform pancreatic
cell transplantation.
This method for insulin-producing cell procurement was conceived in 1988 by prof.
Camillo Ricordi, ISMETT President and Director of the Diabetes Research Institute in Miami (www.drinet.org).
Thanks to this technique it is possible to transplant the pancreatic islets only versus the entire organ.
Today, the so-called "Ricordi method"
is used in the most prestigious centers worldwide. The method,
which involves purifying the pancreas cells that produce insulin,
is a much less invasive procedure compared to the whole organ's
transplant,
and allows patients suffering serious forms of diabetes to recover
and return to a good quality of life.
For this method, the donor's pancreas and a special device are used to separate
the pancreas insulin-producing cells. After their removal the cells are purified
and infused in the recipient by means of a simple injection in the portal vein.
No major surgery such as an organ transplant is required and patients are exposed
to low risks and have all the benefits deriving from a DH procedure.
This technique was successfully experimented in Miami, in Canada, and at NIH
with a 100% success rate.
