Psychological evaluation
of pediatric patients
With pediatric transplant candidates,
eligibility is assessed of both patients and parents. This,
according to the PSITO [National Psychological and Psychiatric
Organ Transplant Taskforce] guidelines, is done to:
Facilitate the parents' consent to the
intervention and children's active participation defining critical
points and available resources.
Facilitate the collaboration to treatment
(therapeutic alliance) in pre- and post-transplant phase.
Plan support measures for critical areas
of parents and children.
Psychological evaluation
of living donor transplant patients
The
psychological
evaluation of a potential donor must be carried out before
any other examination to assess potential hidden psychic disorder
that may hinder the donation. The donor must be fully aware
of all the risks involved. The psychologist assesses the patient's
degree of awareness reached. Another important aspect of the
psychological evaluation is the definition of any potential
psycho-social pressure (coercion) in the donor's family that
may harm him/her. In this regard, an interview with a magistrate
is required by the Italian law to assess the spontaneity of
the donation and the lack of any external conditioning/coercion.
NOTE: In case of a living donation to a pediatric patient
the evaluation is carried out on donor, young recipient and
his/her parents (National Guidelines).
