ISMETT is the
only transplant center in Sicily authorized to perform liver
transplants. ISMETT's medical staff periodically updates the
regional waiting list and assesses the need to remove candidates
from the list, temporarily or definitively. Whenever a change
occurs, the updated waiting list is sent to the Transplant Regional
Reference Center of the Region of Sicily where the
official lists are kept. Whenever a liver becomes available,
either procured in Sicily or offered to the Region of Sicily
by the interregional network through the Transplant Organization
for Central and Southern Italy, this is allocated in compliance
with the established joint regulations *.
The basic criteria used to identify the most appropriate recipient:
blood type and anthropometric parameters (weight, height, etc.) compatibility
clinical severity and compatibility (using the MELD and UNOS classifying systems
as in U.S. transplant centers)
length of time spent on the waiting list
UNOS 1 candidates are classified as "urgent" as they are affected by liver failure
and have a life expectancy, without the liver transplant, equal
or inferior to 7 days. For these patients, the Regional Reference
Center is entitled the first organ available on a national level.
* Liver allocation criteria are housed in detail at the Transplant
Regional Reference Center of the Region of Sicily.
