Patients on the ISMETT waiting lists before the new protocol was approved can ask to be submitted to transplant at the Mediterranean Institute and be assisted by ISMETT physicians in the pre- and post-surgery stages upon request. The new protocol has been in force since April 2003. The experimental period will end in July 2004. Patients needing to be added to the kidney cadaveric transplant waiting list can - in this period - contact the Department of Nephrology and Dialysis of the Civico Hospital, headed by Dr. Vito Sparacino. Criteria for kidney allocation in Sicily The allocation of available kidneys is performed by the Regional Transplant Reference Center according to defined rules, which are agreed upon by all regional transplant centers*. Criteria to identify the most suitable recipient: HLA compatibility between donor and recipient
age and size difference between donor and recipient
waiting time on the list
time on dialysis
urgency
