U.S. Ambassador visits ISMETT

This morning, Lewis M. Eisenberg, U.S. Ambassador to the Italian Republic, accompanied by Mary Ellen Countryman, U.S. Consul General in Naples, and by a delegation of the U.S. Consulate in Naples, visited IRCCS-ISMETT (Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione) in Palermo.

During the visit, the guests were escorted by Angelo Luca, Director of ISMETT, Laura Raimondo, UPMC Italy Managing Director, and Bruno Gridelli, Executive Vice President, UPMC International. After a tour of the hospital, Ambassador Eisenberg commented: “It was a privilege to visit ISMETT, including its pediatric ward, to get a first-hand view of such an advanced hospital that, thanks to transplants and highly specialized surgical procedures, has already saved thousands of lives. ISMETT is an excellent example of successful cooperation between the United States and Sicily, and we hope everyone involved continues to support the great work they do here and their important results.”

Dr. Angelo Luca expressed his satisfaction for the visit of Ambassador Eisenberg, and highlighted “the important role of ISMETT in Sicily, the consolidated management of UPMC, and the long-established collaboration with the United States, which aims at improving standards of care and facilitating access to healthcare for patients from Sicily and other Mediterranean area.”
