{"id":20460,"date":"2025-03-10T08:54:13","date_gmt":"2025-03-10T07:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ismett.edu\/?p=20460"},"modified":"2026-07-07T14:32:21","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T12:32:21","slug":"first-robotic-heart-surgery-performed-at-ismett","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ismett.edu\/en\/news\/first-robotic-heart-surgery-performed-at-ismett\/","title":{"rendered":"First robotic heart surgery at ISMETT"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For the first time ever in a Southern Italy hospital, a cardiac surgery procedure was performed using the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ingegneriabiomedica.org\/news\/terapia\/cardiochirurgia-mininvasiva-con-robot-da-vinci\/\">Da Vinci system, a robotic system<\/a> that allows for mini-invasive video assisted cardiac surgery. <strong>The intervention \u2013 a coronary bypass \u2013 was carried out at ISMETT<\/strong>, the center born from an international partnership between the Sicilian Region and UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center). The surgery was performed by a team led by<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ismett.edu\/en\/news\/professor-francesco-musumeci-to-join-upmc-ismett-heart-center\/\">Francesco Musumeci<\/a><\/strong>, Senior Consultant in Cardiac Surgery, with anesthesiologist Dr. Maria Scarlata.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Da Vinci system is a\u00a0<strong> robotic platform<\/strong>that offers a computerized interface between the surgeon and the surgical instruments. This system is already used at ISMETT for abdominal and thoracic procedures, allowing for precise and <strong>effective <\/strong>minimally-invasive interventions<strong>. This recent procedure was the first use of robotic technology in cardiac surgery at ISMETT.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The use of robotics in cardiac surgery is the approach of the future,&#8221; explained Dr. <strong>Francesco Musumeci<\/strong> . &#8220;It eliminates the need for traditional surgical incisions and enables minimally-invasive procedures, thus improving the quality of care provided to patients. The technique offers numerous benefits for the patient, including enhanced precision during surgery, reduced risk of complications, and a shorter postoperative recovery time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to perform the procedure, three small incisions are made in the patient&#8217;s chest, through which a small camera and two tiny surgical instruments are inserted, along with a lateral incision of approximately 4 cm.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The surgeon sits at a console, where a high-definition, three-dimensional image of the operating field is displayed, magnified ten times. From the console, the surgeon controls the robot&#8217;s arms using two manipulators (similar to joysticks).This allows for optimal visualization of the various anatomical structures, ensuring <em> maximum precision<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The benefits for the patient,&#8221; says Dr. Musumeci, &#8220;are multiple. The procedure is performed on a beating heart without extracorporeal circulation, which allows a very rapid postoperative recovery and minimal risk of complications.
