ISMETT and Palermo’s Conservatorio partner to bring music to the hospital.
A special program of events and monthly concerts for ISMETT patients and visitors was announced today. The goal of this project is to humanize the hospital and to allow students of the Conservatorio di Musica “A. Scarlatti” of Palermo to grow from a solidarity and artistic perspective.
A memorandum of understanding was signed today by Mario Barbagallo and Gregorio Bertolino, respectively president and director of Palermo’s Conservatorio, and Dr. Angelo Luca, CEO of ISMETT. The concerts will be performed by students and teachers of the Conservatorio and broadcast in all patient rooms. This agreement further strengthens a fruitful collaboration that started almost 15 years ago with the first Christmas Concert organized at ISMETT.
“This agreement follows a similar one we signed with the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital of Palermo,” said Mario Barbagallo. “This is another important step in our efforts to connect health and music. Music can heal the spirits and minds and play a therapeutic role in some conditions. The Conservatorio has filed a request to obtain authorization from the Ministry to launching a new music therapy course”.
“This is a 15-year relationship with the Conservatorio di Musica A. Scarlatti of Palermo,” said Angelo Luca, CEO of ISMETT. “Last year, seen the increasing available evidence on the benefits of music for patients, we organized a program of musical events at ISMETT. These events were very much appreciated by our patients and their families. Our goal is to care for the person as a whole, and not just for his or her disease. With this program our younger patients will be more involved and will also have an opportunity to try out some musical instruments, while for patients who won’t be able to attend in person all concerts will be broadcast in their rooms”.
