U.S. Consul General visits ISMETT
The U.S. Consul General in Naples, Mary Avery, visited ISMETT with her delegation on 29 January 2020. Ms. Avery was welcomed by Dr. Angelo Luca, CEO of ISMETT and by Giuseppe Dell’Acqua, Managing Director of UPMC Italy (the Italian division of UPMC, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), the American partner that has been managing the transplant center in Palermo for over 20 years. At ISMETT, Ms. Avery visited the intensive care unit, the thoracic cardiac surgery unit, the new imaging laboratory, and the pediatrics unit.
“ISMETT is the clearest example of the outstanding results that Sicily and the United States are able to achieve with joint investments in state-of-the-art technology and top level professionals,” commented Ms. Avery. The U.S. general consul also met the leadership of Ri.MED Foundation, soon to start construction work on a new biotechnology center in Carini, near Palermo. “Ri.MED Foundation’s new Biomedical Research and Biotechnology Center that will be built a few kilometers from Palermo, the result of a fruitful collaboration between public and private partners, is excellent news for Sicily. Not only will it accomplish increasingly ambitious results in research and medicine, but it will also create new highly-qualified jobs for the benefit of the entire Sicilian community,” concluded Ms. Avery
“ISMETT is the result of an international partnership between the Region of Sicily and UPMC. We have an ongoing fruitful collaboration with the United States that started over twenty years,” said ISMETT CEO, Dr. Angelo Luca. “Over the years, the know-how and skills shared by UPMC have allowed us to reach important results in the field of clinical research, attract EU funds for technological upgrade and provide the highest levels of care to our patients and to patients coming to us from other countries,” concluded Dr. Luca.
