LIVING DONOR TRANSPLANTS

At ISMETT kidney and liver transplant programs are active for both adult and pediatric patients.

In Italy, living donation is regulated by laws and protocols that define its operating procedures, potential clinical contraindications for the donor, and the process to follow to become a donor. Living donations compensate the shortage of suitable organs for transplantation.

The Living Donor Kidney Transplant Program has been reinforced over the last few years and is currently one of the main surgical programs at ISMETT. Preemptive kidney transplants are proposed before the patient’s kidney function deteriorates to the point of needing dialysis.

ISMETT is one of the few centers in Italy with an ongoing active Living Donor Liver Transplant Program. In this case, a small portion of the liver is donated. This kind of donation is possible thanks to the ability of the liver to regenerate.
