Gaetano Burgio

gaetano-burgioDr. Burgio arrived at ISMETT in 2000 as an anesthesia and critical care attending physician, and began his experience with liver transplantation with Dr. Victor Scott, Anesthesia and Critical Care Senior Attending from the University of Pittsburgh. From 2003 to 2008, he was in charge of the Intensive Care Unit, and since 2008 he has been the director of the Critical Care Unit and Operating Room Service.  Before ISMETT he worked in public and private hospitals in Sicily.  He specialized in Anesthesia, Critical Care, Pain Therapy, and Hyperbaric Chamber Therapy at the University of Palermo, and Clinical Toxicology in Pavia.  During his years at ISMETT, he has spent several training periods at UPMC in Pittsburgh in order to improve his knowledge of, and skills in, the anesthesiology and intensive care management of liver transplant recipients, lung transplant recipients, and pediatric patients.  He currently manages adult and pediatric patients undergoing abdominal surgery and liver and kidney transplantation.  He is experienced with extracorporeal life support (ECMO). He is an assistant professor of clinical surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, a member of many national and international scientific associations, and the author of several scientific publications.
