Neurology

The Neurology Service at ISMETT focuses on the diagnosis and management of neurological diseases concerning patients affected with end-stage diseases of organs with vital functions. At ISMETT there is also an extensive cardiac surgery program, so the neurologist is involved in the pre-op stratification of patients, identifying those at high risk, and in the prevention and management of peri-operative neurological complications. Both inpatients with acute neurological disorders during hospitalization, and outpatients with chronic disorders are treated and periodic follow ups are ensured.

The service works in close collaboration with all ISMETT departments with the following main programs:

  • Diagnosis and management of neurological complications post solid organ transplant
  • Diagnosis and management of peri-operative neurological complications in cardiac surgery
  • Assessment prior to transplant or other surgeries in patients with neurological comorbidities
  • Diagnosis and management of neurological diseases in patients affected with advanced heart failure, candidates for ventricular assist device (VAD) placement, or with cardio-respiratory diseases on ECMO (extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation) support.
