Diabetology

Head of Unit

Alessandro Mattina

At IRCCS ISMETT we provide diagnosis and treatment for patients with diabetes mellitus who are awaiting or have undergone a transplant. The Unit assesses eligibility for pancreas or pancreatic islet transplantation and provides highly-specialized therapies and follow-up. We use state-of-the-art pharmacological treatments and diabetes management technologies to deliver personalized care, offering the full range of therapeutic options, including isolated pancreas transplantation or combined with a kidney transplant. Candidates for a pancreas transplant undergo a multidisciplinary medical and surgical assessment and receive comprehensive support throughout the preoperative pathway and post-transplant follow-up.

Particular emphasis is placed on a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, involving the Hepatology Unit, the Dietetics Service, and the Clinical Psychology Service, among others. Patients at a high cardiovascular risk or with heart failure are jointly managed with the Cardiology Unit. The Diabetology Unit is also engaged in clinical research on diabetes and metabolism through developing experimental protocols and attending multicenter projects. It benefits from the expertise of Dr. Camillo Ricordi, Chairman of IRCCS ISMETT’s Board of Directors and Director Emeritus of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) at the University of Miami, one of the world’s leading research centers in the fields of diabetes and pancreatic islet transplantation.
