Launched in October 2024, the IRCCS ISMETT Heart Transplant Program provides a vital option for patients with end-stage heart failure. Between 2004 and 2025, 302 heart transplants were performed. Heart transplantation is intended for patients under 65 years of age; however, in selected cases and when optimal biological conditions are present, the age limit may be extended to 70 years or older.
In support of the heart transplant program, IRCCS ISMETT has developed an advanced VAD (ventricular assist device, or “artificial heart”) program. With 120 VAD implants performed since 2010, this technology plays a crucial role for transplant candidates whose clinical condition is progressively deteriorating making it impossible for them to wait for an organ to become available.
Latest-generation VADs are miniaturized devices, centrifugal pumps designed to be fully implanted in the patient’s chest cavity. Thanks to their compact size, these devices promote earlier patient mobilization and in most cases their discharge after a few weeks .
Following discharge, patients receive comprehensive training to independently manage their VAD at home. The program includes ongoing support from a specialized medical team offering continuous monitoring and follow-up. This technology allows patients to manage their condition independently while maintaining direct access to hospital staff whenever needed.
Through the integration of its VAD program, IRCCS ISMETT offers advanced and personalized treatment care to patients with severe heart failure, significantly improving their quality of life while awaiting for a heart transplant.
