The liver transplant program at IRCCS ISMETT was launched on July 31, 1999, and has become one of the leading programs in Europe in terms of patient survival, as confirmed by official data from the Italian National Transplant Center. Between 1999 and 2025, 1,872 liver transplants were performed, including 1,435 from deceased donors.
IRCCS ISMETT also utilizes organs from marginal donors with the so-called “split liver” technique in which a liver from a deceased donor is divided into two segments. This allows one donor’s organ to be transplanted in two recipients: the right lobe for an adult patient and the left lobe for a pediatric patient.
Thanks to these innovative approaches, IRCCS ISMETT is recognized as one of the leading centers for pediatric liver transplantation..
