IRCCS ISMETT is authorized to perform pancreas and beta-cell (pancreatic islet) transplantation, a form of therapy indicated for patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
This type of transplantation offers several options:
- Simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplantation for patients with diabetic nephropathy (chronic kidney failure caused by diabetes). In some cases, the kidney donor may be different from the deceased donor providing the pancreas. This approach helps optimize the limited organ resources available.
Pancreas transplantation alone, performed in patients with type 1 diabetes before diabetic nephropathy develops.
Pancreas transplantation after kidney transplantation, performed in patients with type 1 diabetes who have previously received a kidney transplant.
