Dott. Bertani Alessandro
Dr. Bertani is the Head of the Department for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Thoracic and Pulmonary Diseases and Lung Transplantation at IRCCS ISMETT.
He is Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and Director of the Preclinical Research Laboratories at IRCCS ISMETT.
He has performed more than 2,000 general and thoracic surgical procedures and over 1,000 gastrointestinal and airway endoscopic procedures.
He has specific expertise in minimally invasive esophageal and lung surgery and has coordinated the Thoracic Surgery Program at IRCCS ISMETT-UPMC since 2008.
Since 2005, he has contributed to the development of the IRCCS ISMETT Lung Transplant Program, one of the most active programs in Italy, performing approximately 15 procedures each year. Its activities include deceased-donor lobar transplantation in adult and pediatric patients and extracorporeal respiratory support.
In 2006, Dr. Bertani performed the world’s first lung transplant in an HIV-positive patient.
He earned his medical degree from the University of Pavia School of Medicine and Surgery in 1998.
After training in the General Surgery and Liver and Lung Transplant Unit at Ospedali Riuniti di Bergamo, he completed clinical fellowships in Cardiothoracic Transplantation from 2002 to 2003 and Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery from 2003 to 2004 at the University of Pittsburgh in the United States.
He subsequently completed a clinical fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at IRCCS ISMETTin Palermo from 2005 to 2006.
In 2006, he earned a Ph.D. in Experimental Surgery and Microsurgery from the University of Pavia School of Medicine.
He is listed in the Italian national professional registers for General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery.
He is a member of numerous international medical societies, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS), International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT), and European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS). He also serves on several Italian scientific boards and committees.
He has been visiting professor at several lung transplant and thoracic surgery centers worldwide.
Dr. Bertani is a member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Society of Thoracic Surgery and VATS Group Italy.
He has been principal investigator for several clinical and preclinical research projects in thoracic surgery and transplantation, with a focus on lung cancer, organ preservation, and lung transplantation.
