TAVI: ISMETT first in Italy for number of procedures

ISMETT confirms its excellence in the field of interventional cardiology. ISMETT in Palermo, born from the partnership between the Sicilian Region and UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), is included in the “Top 20” for number of TAVI performed. This was certified by GISE, the Italian Society of Interventional Cardiology, which presented outcomes in terms of numbers and quality of procedures during its last national congress.Overall, 225 procedures were performed in 2022, placing ISMETT at the twelfth position in the Italy. “This is an extraordinary result for our Interventional Cardiology unit,” said Caterina Gandolfo, Chief of the Interventional Cardiology unit of IRCCS ISMETT-UPMC. The GISE report certifies the level achieved by ISMETT: ours is one of the centers with the highest volume of activity, with excellent results in terms of procedural success and patient safety.”

TAVI has revolutionized the treatment of aortic valve stenosis. It is a minimally invasive interventional cardiology procedure to treat aortic stenosis through an artery in the leg without the need for major surgery and general anesthesia.

“Today, TAVI is increasingly used, especially in elderly patients or patients with extremely complex conditions who cannot undergo major surgery. Thanks to this procedure,” continued Dr. Gandolfo, “patients can be treated with a safe and effective minimally invasive procedure, with a short hospital stay and discharge in most cases the day after the procedure.”
