Healing through art: artists Domilici and Scianna at the Pediatric Unit at ISMETT.

Art and culture as a means to support healing. This idea underpins the collaboration between ISMETT and two Sicilian artists, Francesco Domilici and Maurizio Scianna, which led to an artwork that will from today enhance the Pediatric Unit of ISMETT. The 100×100 cm photographic work printed on a matte Dibond aluminum panel set against a deep blue background, features imagery that opens a dialog through small cherubs, figures of joy designed to bring serenity and happiness to the young patients of ISMETT. The artwork was officially delivered to ISMETT today. “We believe art can heal souls and that beauty can support recovery,” said  Francesco Domilici, photographer and multidisciplinary artist whose works are exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London “Art,” he continued, “has now been shown to be an additional tool in the fight against disease. Immunocompromised patients, such as transplant recipients, can greatly benefit from culture and works of art.”

The artist visited the Pediatric Unit, meeting clinicians and management, and spending time with the young patients at ISMETT. “We chose a subject,” he explained, “that could bring a sense of calm to children. A blue tone as the primary color to evoke openness, and small cherubs inspired by the Serpotta tradition, intended to convey joy.”

The two artists are often involved in charitable initiatives and events. Last year, they auctioned some of their works for charity, with proceeds donated to ASTRAFE, an association that for over 20 years has been supporting patients who have undergone or are awaiting transplantation.
