ISMETT Thoracic Surgery and Lung Transplantation Unit Receives SICT Accreditation

ISMETT’s Thoracic Surgery and Lung Transplantation Unit has received the accreditation of the Italian Society of Thoracic Surgery, (SICT – Società Italiana di Chirurgia Toracica). ISMETT is the first hospital in southern Italy to receive this prestigious recognition. To obtain the accreditation, 100 quality standards must be met. The standards are divided into System Standards, on the general organization of the unit; Patient Path Standards, on the integrated patient-care paths; and Lung Cancer Indicators and Standards, on specific care paths by type of diseases, with particular reference to lung cancers.

The accreditation is voluntary and must be renewed annually. The goal of the process is to ensure the quality of thoracic surgery patient care in Italy, and conduct an official census of the hospitals able to provide the highest standards of care.

“We are proud of this important recognition from an outstanding certification body,” said Alessandro Bertani, chief of the Thoracic Surgery and Lung Transplantation Unit “This certification is evidence of the high standards of care offered to patients coming to our unit, and it’s a guarantee of safe and high quality patient care at ISMETT.”

Since 2005 ISMETT has been offering integrated care programs for all diseases requiring highly specialized thoracic surgery. Most of these surgical procedures can be performed with a minimally-invasive approach (thoracoscopy) with less stress, less pain, and fewer hospital days.

This accreditation is only the latest recognition given to ISMETT in the field of quality. ISMETT has been accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI) since 2009. It has also received ISO certification for its diagnostic services and laboratories, the OHSAS (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) certification for the environmental management system, and has been included in the international registry of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).
