Prof. Camillo Ricordi is the world’s greatest expert in the treatment of diabetes

Expertscape (a U.S. website specialized in medicine ranking healthcare professionals) appointed Italian physician Camillo Ricordi, Director of the Diabetes Research Institute and Cell Transplant Center at the University of Miami and President of the Board of Directors at IRCCS ISMETT of Palermo, Italy, “World Expert in the field of pancreatic islet transplantation for treatment of diabetes.”

Expertscape objectively ranks physicians using a non-manipulable and transparent method of calculation, based on the medical articles published in the past ten years, assessing the journal’s quality, the role as author, and the article’s year of publication.

Prof. Ricordi is known for having invented the first device to isolate large quantities of insulin-producing cells of the human pancreas, and also for having successfully performed the first set of pancreatic islets transplant curing diabetes. Today, this procedure is used worldwide in all medical centers performing this procedure. Prof. Ricordi is also author of over 1,000 medical articles, which have been quoted more than 40,000 times. Last year, he was appointed Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), one of the most prestigious international scientific acknowledgements granted to academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that make a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society.

Since 2004, Prof. Ricordi is president of the Board of Directors at IRCCS ISMETT. The collaboration between Prof. Ricordi, ISMETT, and Ri.MED Foundation allowed to launch the project for the creation at ISMETT of the GMP Facility for the production of cell products destined to advanced therapy in regenerative medicine, and also start a pancreatic islets transplant program at ISMETT.
