ISMETT-UPMC strengthens its national leadership in pancreatology.

Dr. Luca Barresi, head of the Pancreas Unit at ISMETT-UPMC was elected member of the National Board of AISP (Italian Association for the Study of the Pancreas) at the recent National Pancreatology Congress.

Dr. Barresi’s appointment is a recognition of the work carried out by ISMETT-UPMC in the field of pancreatology and confirms ISMETT’s increasingly central role at a national level. “This is not only a personal recognition but, most of all, a teamwork accomplishment by ISMETT and its Pancreas Unit,” said Dr. Luca Barresi. “We are convinced this will further strengthen the Sicilian pancreatology network, a project we’re working on to ensure patients have access to increasingly qualified diagnostic and therapeutic pathways.”

Founded over 40 years ago, AISP is a multidisciplinary scientific association that brings together professionals dedicated to the research and treatment of pancreatic diseases. Its mission is to promote pancreatic science, support both clinical and basic research, and raise public awareness about the importance of early diagnosis.

The Pancreas Unit at ISMETT-UPMC is a multidisciplinary program for diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic diseases, integrating the expertise of gastroenterologists/endoscopists, surgeons, oncologists, interventional radiologists, and nutritionists. The working model is based on collegial case management to offer patients personalized pathways grounded in advanced scientific evidence.

In recent years, the Pancreas Unit has become a regional and national reference point, significantly contributing to research and innovation. ISMETT-UPMC is currently the leading center in Sicily for the number of pancreatic surgeries performed. Over the past year, the Pancreas Unit’s outpatient clinic followed over 1,000 patients, discussed 450 cases by a multidisciplinary team, and performed more than 70 pancreatectomies.
